Frequently Asked Questions

What 'Wood' You Like to Know?

What is a CNC machine?

A CNC router, or Computer Numerical Control router, is a machine that uses computer programming to precisely cut, carve, and shape materials like wood, plastic, soft metals, and foam commonly used for creating detailed designs and custom pieces.

As of right now we primarily use our LongMill Benchtop CNC MK2 (30"x30") for wood, though we have used it on plexiglass. We plan on experimenting with other materials.

What is the lead time on orders?

Once the design has been finalized, our current lead time to fulfill most orders is 8 weeks (will vary due to material availability and project complexity).

Is there a consulting fee?

No extra fees for consultations—design estimates are included in your quote. If our design or labour costs come in significantly higher than the quote, the difference is on us. We pride ourselves on integrity and will never surprise you with hidden charges.

How long will my quote take?

Our aim is to return a quote to you within two weeks of receiving your order form. Some quotes may take longer if we need to look into sourcing special materials.

Please look in your spam/junk folder! We will certainly be following up with clarifying questions but even if we cannot fulfill your order, we will always respond.

Do you require a deposit?

Yes, we require a 50% non-refundable deposit of your total quote at the beginning of your work order, mostly to cover the cost of materials.

Do you offer delivery and/or shipping?

We offer free delivery in Saskatoon and surrounding area (within 30-minutes).

At this time we are not setup to offer shipping; however, we may be able to accommodate this for smaller items. Be sure to let us know in your order form if this is something you prefer. We're still figuring out the e-commerce world!

What types of wood do you use?

Our most commonly used wood species are maple, white oak, red oak, walnut, and pine though there are many other options including cherry or ash.

We determine the use based on price, availability at local wood suppliers, grain, and the way it handles particular cuts and carves. For instance, we’re learning that while pine is affordable, its softer fibres don’t hold up as well on the CNC machine and require more manual sanding.

If you are seeking a particular species, be sure to let us know when filling out the order form!

We love supporting YXE Wood Select but also shop at Windsor Plywood.

Do you do any staining and or painting finishes?

Yes, we can stain and/or paint your piece. We can also leave it as a DIY project for you!

If you desire a particular look or colour, please let us know in the order form. We do not currently have a wide selection of finishing products on hand, but we're more than willing to purchase these.

Do you have a laser?

Not yet! But it's something we have been considering. We will let you know if your design is best suited for a laser.

What size is your CNC?

We have a LongMill Benchtop CNC MK2 (30"x30"). One day we dream of expanding our woodshop to accommodate a larger size! (Micah wants all the tools..)

Where can I find your products?

We currently do not have any stocked items available at local stores or markets. Everything is a custom order, made exactly for you!

Where are you located?

We are a home-based (well, garage-based!) woodshop in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan.
